It is primarily used during cataract surgery to securely hold and stabilize the lens nucleus, facilitating its fragmentation and emulsification with reduced risk of capsular damage or zonular stress.

They are also used during other types of intraocular surgeries, such as in the removal of retained lens fragments, nucleus dislocation, or iris retraction.  The instrument features a pair of delicate, angled jaws supplied with a concave outline. Moreover, the jaws have interlocking teeth on their edges for extracting the nucleus pieces with maximum precision.
